Both our Chardonnay & Viognier are made from hillside vines grown on limestone in the western slopes of Te Mata Peak, Hawke's Bay.

This convergence of terroir & climate gives these wines their amazingly unique points of difference. Limestone is prized in viticulture, especially for white varieties, because it retains moisture, yet drains well. It reflects light and retains heat, helping grapes ripen slowly and evenly, plus enhances acidity and minerality in the wine, especially noticeable in Chardonnay.

The western face of Te Mata Peak offers excellent sun exposure, crucial for full phenolic ripeness & cooler evening temperatures which preserves acidity and aromatics. Its location also provides shelter from prevailing winds.

Wild fermentation is slower, relying on naturally occurring yeasts in the vineyard, winery, or barrel. This results in more complex & nuanced flavour, aroma & texture, not only from the gentle interaction between the wine & barrel but also the sequence (almost a relay) of different yeast that carry out the fermentation.

Very dark purple and ruby at the core, persistent to the rim where it changes to a ruby pink hue. A full and captivating bouquet with aromas of spices and dark berries, clove, ligurian olive, boysenberry and raspberry, field mushroom and dried herb and a whisper of rosemary. Alex Corban (17th March 1925 – 7th September 2014)

In the 1950s and 1960s, he led the shift from fortified wines to high-quality table wines using European (vitis vinifera) grape varieties and advanced winemaking techniques.

β€œIt was a bottle of 1955 Cabernet made by Alex Corban along with a bottle of Tom McDonald’s 1949 Cabernet that Andre Simon took with him when he left New Zealand, β€œto show my Australian friends what New Zealand can do” (Wine In New Zealand, Frank Thorpy, 1971) πŸ·πŸ‡πŸŒΏ

In 1962, Alex introduced New Zealand’s first sparkling wine to be made in commercial quantities 🍾πŸ₯‚

It was fitting to toast him during a family dinner to commemorate his birthday with the last of this sparkling wine (pictured) and a Cabernet he made in 1991. Although the fizz in the sparkling had dissipated, both wines were a pleasure to drink, well-made, in good condition, balanced and obviously made from premium grapes.
